PRETTY AND PRACTICAL FOR THE LADIES

Here’s a lovely pair of lace gloves (next to the plaid ones we’ll be featuring soon) for you to knit, circa 1953. Enjoy! Pattern after the jump…
Women’s Lace Gloves No. 626

Gauge: 9 sts = 1 inch in st st.
Medium Size - adjust size by using a needle size higher or lower than the one you get gauge with, or block to higher size (if anyone does make larger or smaller gloves, or indeed if anyone makes them in this size, please let us know how it goes and take pics for us.)
Materials - Bear brand or Fleisher’s Super-spun Nylon; or Bear brand or Fleisher’s DeLuxe Sock and Sport yarn, 2 oz. (We recommend using any fingering/sock weight yarn for this project.) Sock needles, 1 set size 2.
Right glove:
Cuff:
Cast on 28 sts or hem of back of glove. P 1 row, k1 row for 4 rows.
Next row (wrong side): K1, *yo, k2tog; rep from *, end k1. K 1 row, cast on 30 sts at end of row - 58 sts. Divide sts on 3 needles as follows: Needle 1: 28 sts, Needle 2: 14 sts, Needle 3: 16 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. K28, p2, *k2, p2; repeat from * to end of round. Repeat last round twice.’
Pattern:
Round 1: K3, *yo, skp, k2, k2tog, yo, k2; repeat from * twice, k1, work p2, k2 ribbing to end of round.
Round 2: K28, work ribbing to end.
Round 3: K4, *yo, skp, k2tog, yo, k4; repeat from * twice, work ribbing to end.
Round 4: Same as round 2.
Repeat these 4 rounds until ribbing measures 2 inches, decreasing 2 sts in ribbing on last round - 56 sts.
First increase round for thumb gore: Work pattern for 28 sts, pm before next st, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, pm (5 sts total added for thumb gore), k to end of round; 58 sts. Carry along markers as you knit. Work 3 rounds even with first 28 sts in pattern and remaining sts in stockinette st.
Second increase round: Work to first marker, pm, k1, yo, k3, yo, k1, k to end of round. Continue to increase in this fashion every fourth round until there are 21 sts between markers/ 74 sts total in round. Work 2 rounds even.
Next round - Work 28 pat sts, slip next 21 sts to a holder for thumb; cast on 7 sts for inner side of thumb, place these 7 sts on an extra DPN. To same needle, k remaining sts of 2nd needle; k to end of round; 60 sts. Work 1 1/2 sts even, end just before the 7 cast-on sts with pattern round 4. This completes lace pattern.
First finger:
Slip last 7 sts worked to a free needle, to same needle, k next 10 sts (the sts right over the 7 cast on sts and the next 3 sts, slip remaining 48 sts onto a holder for other 3 fingers, cast on 5 sts for gusset. Divide these 22 sts on 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist. K around for 2 1/2 ins, or 1/4 in less than desired finished length.
First decrease round: K9, k2tog, k9, k2tog; 20 sts.
K 1 round even.
Second decrease round: *K3, k2tog; rep from * 3 times; 16 sts.
K 1 round even.
Third decrease round: *K2, k2tog; rep from * 3 times; 12 sts.
K 1 round even.
Final round: K2tog 6 times. Break off, leaving an end. Draw end through remaining 6 sts and fasten off.
Second Finger:
Beginning at back of hand (lace section), slip 8 sts from holder to needle, join yarn and pick up and k 5 sts from gusset of fisrt finger. Slip 7 more sts from other end of holder (palm of hand) to another needleand k. Cast on 4 more sts for gusset. Divide these 24 sts on 3 needles and join. K around for 2 3/4 inches or until 1/4 inch less than desired finished length.
First decrease round - *K4, K2tog; repeat from * 3 times; 20 sts.
K 1 round even.
Finish as for first finger.
Third finger:
Slip 7 sts from back of hand to needle., pick up and k 4 sts on 4 sts cast on for gusset, k 7 sts from palm of hand to needle, cast on 4 sts for gusset Divide these 22 sts on 3 needles, join. K around for 2 1/2 ins, or 1/4 in less than desired finished length. Finish as for first finger.
Fourth Finger:
Slip remaining 14 sts to 2 needles, pick up and k 4 sts on the 4 sts cast on for gusset. Divide these 18 sts on 3 needles, join. K around for 2 ins, or for 1/4 in less than desired length. First decrease round: k7, k2tog, k7, k2tog; 16 sts. K 1 round even. Finish as for first finger.
Thumb:
Slip the 21 thumb sts to 2 needles, pick up and k 7 sts on the 7 cast-on sts. Divide these 28 sts on 3 needles, join. K 3 rounds even.
First decrease round: *Dec 1 st in center of sts picked up. K1 round even. Repeat from * 3 times - 24 sts. K even until 2 ins above picked up sts, or 1/4 in less than desired length. Finish as for second finger.
LEFT GLOVE:
Cuff:
Work same as right glove until cuff measures 2 ins, decreasing 2 sts in ribbing on last round; 56 sts.
First inc round for thumb gore - Work pattern for 28 sts. K to within 3 sts of end of round, place a marker before next st, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, place another marker (5 sts in thumb gore); 58 sts. Carry up markers. Work 3 rounds even with 28 sts in pattern and remaining sts in stockinette stitch.
Second inc round for thumb gore - Work to first marker, k1, yo, k3, yo, k1. Continue to inc 2 sts in thumb gore every 4th round until there are 21 sts in thumb gore; 74 sts in round. Work 2 rounds even.
Next round - work 28 pattern sts, k to first marker; slip next 21 sts to a holder for thumbl cast on 7 sts for inner side of thumb, join; 60 sts. Work 1 1/2 ins even, end with pattern round 4, just after the 7 cast-on sts. This completes lace pattern.
First finer - Slip last 10 sts worked to a free needle (the sts right over the cast-on sts and previous 3 sts) to the same needle k the next 7 sts. Slip remaininng 43 sts to a thread, cast on 5 sts for gusset. Divide these 22 sts on 3 needles, join. Finish as for irst finger of right glove.
Finish to correspond to right glove.
Finishing - Turn under hem on back of hand on openwork turning ridge. Sew to wrong side. Steam and block.

Oh, I like the looks of that one…and wouldn’t it look great with a gauntlet…maybe pick up and knit, with a picot bind-off?
