Yay! The winter issue of Knitty is finally here - and I’ve got an article in it (about vintage knitting, of course!) Check it out here! (Forgive my own horn-tooting, but I’m just too excited for words!)
To celebrate and to welcome new folks to the blog and the Vintage KAL (which is alive and well and waiting for you to add your own vintage goodies to the mix), I’m hosting a contest. The prizes? Yarny goodness! Let’s get to the prizes first, shall we?
First up, the grand prize: A gorgeous kit from Handmaiden/Fleece Artist for the Bias Shawl. It’ll be in my favorite Handmaiden color, the sublime Mineral (this stock pic is in green):

First prize:
Second prize: a pair of Colonial rosewood double-pointed needles for your sock-knitting pleasure!:

Third prize: two skeins of Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock - together we will get better at making socks! - in the lovely colorway of your choice!
Okay, so how do you win this fabulous booty? Here’s the contest:
Guess the years that these vintage knits hail from:
Number One:
Number Two:
Number Three:
Put your guess in the comments below this post. There is a three-year spread, so for instance if you guess 1933, I’ll give you credit for 1932-1934. I’ll take the top three closest winners; in the event that more than one person guesses them all right (!), I’ll hold a drawing for the top prizes. Here’s your chance to put your knowledge of vintage to the test!
Are you new here? Have you never posted a comment before? Then I’m very pleased to meet you, and please do feel free to enter the contest! One of the amazing things I’ve learned floating around in the blogosphere over the past year or so is that it’s chockablock with really great people - I’m glad to make your acquaintance. I hope you’ll keep coming back to talk with me and to keep reading. I see this blog and the Vintage KAL as not just a place for my tiny-brained rantings, but as a place to share great patterns, interesting ideas, and the love of all things yarny and good. So welcome!
Now for the boring details:
1) Your comments are most welcome! Each person gets one guess apiece, though, so take your best shot. :) The only way to enter is to leave a comment on this post. I’ll be delighted to read your comments - it means a lot to me, you readers of this teensy little blog, and I’m delighted to get to meet y’all.
2) The contest will run til midnight on December 31 - the winners will get chosen on the first day of the year! So you have time to do your holiday thang before you go racking your brain on obscure vintage pattern pics. Winners will be posted here on the blog and also on the Vintage KAL.
3) So can I ask you to pass on the word by posting about it on your blog, linking to this contest, or otherwise shouting it from the hills? If you’re excited by the chance to win some goodies, or if you just liked the Knitty article? This blog and the Vintage KAL have been such great places to meet amazing people and to share resources on everything from vintage knitting to sheer randomness. I’d like to share my good fortune with as many people as possible - and I’m very grateful for your help in getting it out there! I love you guys!
4) Not really a rule, but if you have a chance, go visit the delightful Aija, whose legs (va va voom!) grace my article (and think good thoughts about the fabulous April and Dee, who aren’t bloggers but whose lovely boobies and gorgeous gloved hand, respectively, are made famous in the pics.)
That’s enough ranting for now - I’ll just end by saying thanks for making this so fun for me, and who loves you baby?

Found you from the link on Knitty. I love vintage patterns and my main sock pattern come from a vintage Lux book. As for your contest, it’s not an easy one. First picture 1965,
second one 1958 and last one 1950.

My guesses:
#1 - 1963
#2 - 1947

December 8th, 2006 at 6:39 pm
I enjoyed the Knitty article. I was just looking at the Bias Shawl, and I was wondering if you thought it appropriate for a first knitting project. I am looking for a good kit to give to my mother in law, and I think the yarn must be wonderful, but I don’t want to scare her off with a pattern that is too hard. On the other hand, I don’t want to bore her with a pattern that is too easy - and I’d prefer to give her a written pattern than not to.
Since I’m here, I guess I’ll guess:
#1: 1960
#2: 1954
#3: 1957
December 8th, 2006 at 6:52 pm
Hi great blog - can’t wait to see the KLA. My guesses are 1962, 1948 and 1943… I have a huge collection of oldies myself and love digging them out for new ideas. BTW, enjoyed your Knitty article.

I’m going to say…
1. 1966
2. 1949
3. This one’s rather tricky…but I’ll go with 1934. It’s very hard to figure out a year with nothing to go on but baby curls and shorts.
Congratulations on the Knitty article! I’d recently joined your vintage knitalong and was pleasantly surprised to see you covering the topic in Knitty. I only wish you had linked to some of the wonderful patterns your site and others offer.

I’ll take a crack at the contest, too:

2. 1943
3. 1956
I hope I didn’t embarrass myself.
Coincidentally, I ordered a Victoria from Loopy via an eBay listing. I’m very eager to get it. Thanks for the preview. It’s a shame the bag sucks.

Congrats on the article, Kristen! I was hoping to cathc you in chat today, but didn’t see you.
I have to raid my mother’s basement again so if I come up with vintage patterns, I’ll send then along.
December 9th, 2006 at 12:18 am
I’ve been collecting vintage patterns as I find them … thanks for giving me some courage to undertake knitting from them. I guess: 1973, 1948, 1941.
December 9th, 2006 at 1:12 am
I guess I am the first guesser! I really have no idea, but I will wing it.
I think the first picture is from the 60s and the bright colors put it in the latter half of the decade, so my guess is 1968.
I think the second picture (love it!) is classic early forties, say 1944.
And the last picture, I think, is the hardest. I don’t remember those in my time, so I will guess before my own birthday (but not by a whole lot), so 1957.
December 9th, 2006 at 2:41 am

Here I go, 61, 48, and 53. In that order. Worth a shot.
December 9th, 2006 at 3:29 am
Great Article! I like vintage patterns, unfortunatly I can keep them all. I’m currently selling some on Ebay. Ok, here’s my best shot:
#1 1967 (because of teh glasses and the hairstyles)
#2 1947 (red lips)
#3 1957 (just for the heck of it)
December 9th, 2006 at 3:58 am

Congratulations on the article!!!!
1. 1963
2. 1946
3. 1934
FYI, I didn’t go to my stash of vintage patterns to check to see if I have these or anything similar…the last one I picked because my FIL is always going on about how he is a “child of the depression” and I am sure he would trot out the “my mom had to make our diapers, we were all so poor” comment if he thought of it, though technically, that is a diaper cover, and not a diaper, but you get the idea…and for the first one, I said 1963 but am aware it could be later, I am thinking of that song “Time of the Season” and that line, “what’s your name? who’s your daddy?”

Your article on vintage garments was fantastic. You explained how to recalculate the gauge, and that gives me good incentive to tackle some of those wonderful patterns I have been collecting.

Yeah! A contest. I found your blog from a blog who found it from another blog… LOL. So I’m new here, and I’ll explore the rest of your blog in a bit. I’m a vintage pattern junkie too, so I’ll have to read your article as well. I’m excited to see if you’ll teach me anything new LOL.
So, my guesses:
1960, 1945, and I don’t think the last photo’s as old as everyone else does… So I’ll say 1950.

1) 1967 — I could come up with SO MANY inapproiate captions for this photo … perhaps that could become a contest in itself? :) It is like a train wreck …. I can’t stop looking at it. It is like creepy/funny all rolled into one.
2)1952

1) 1973 - that’s when I had a pair of pants with a rise that high.
2) 1944 - one year after Ingrid Bergman was in Casablanca, and that’s what this reminds me of.
3)1951 - when my brother was born. Hey! I want to make this pattern. Cute bum.

[…] Second, I encountered a fun contest the other day at The Kitchener Bitch. She has some vintage photos posted and you have to guess what years they were taken. There are prizes and still quite a bit of time left to enter. […]

I found your blog via your knitty article - and I’ve been obsessively googling about vintage knitting ever since!
Throughout the knitting dead years here in the UK I’ve been collecting vintage wool. patterns, needles etc from charity shops and using them to knit clothes for my 1930s -60s vintage dolls . Now I’m going to start knitting up some vintage patterns for myself - believe it or not I hadn’t thought of that before!
I really enjoyed your article and I’m so glad i found your blog - thanks and have a great New Year!
